The spring issue, featuring the winners of the 2011 BLR prizes, is now available!
The fiction winner, "But Now Am Found" by Patti Horvath, is a tender story—equal parts devotion and disillusionment—of a teenage boy in love with a girl who wears a brace for scoliosis. Judge Andre Dubus III noted, “With precise and poetic prose, we are taken deeply into startling terrain, for this story does what all fine fiction does, illuminates age-old truths as if for the very first time. This is a gem!”
The nonfiction winner, "The Tag" by Elizabeth Crowell, is a harrowingly human story of parents facing the birth of a child with a life-threatening illness. This winning essay was selected by judge Jerome Groopman.
The poetry prizewinner, "Sinkhole" by Janet Tracy Landman, is a delicate meditation on grief. Judge Marie Ponsot said of the poem, "We read the bleak loss with a beautiful sense of truth."
There is a lot of amazing work to be found in this issue! You can order a copy and see a complete list of authors here.
