Spring issue now available!
April 10, 2013
The Spring issue—featuring the winners of the 2013 BLR prizes—is now available.
The fiction winner, "The No-Tell Hotel" by Kathryn Trueblood, was chosen by judge Jane Smiley, who noted: "I love the voice and the depiction of the kids... Lots of suspense and a real largeness of perception. So much packed into a small space—that's what I love about a great short story."
The nonfiction winner, "Dust, Light, Life" by Jacqueline Kolosov, was selected by judge Mary Roach. The essay explores the cycle of life and death by deftly intertwining observations of a colleague's increasing infirmity and a town's moth infestation.
The poetry winner, "The Learn'd Astronomer on the Radio" by Laura Passin, contemplates the existence of a doppelganger for every living soul. The poem was selected by judge Mark Doty.
The issue also contains new work from Steve Gehrke, Chard deNiord, Joan Leegant, Sandy Longhorn, Elizabeth Onusko, and others, as well as a special series of recollections of the evacuations of NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital during Hurricane Sandy.
