Spring issue -- featuring our 2014 contest winners -- now available
April 15, 2014
The Spring issue—featuring the winners of the 2014 BLR prizes—is now available.
The fiction winner, "Pediatricology" by Abby Horowitz—chosen by judge Nathan Englander—follows a pediatrics resident struggling to find her way as a doctor in a ward full of sick children, academic sarcasm, and an attending with a distinctive mode of mentorship.
The nonfiction winner, "Forty-One Months" by Will McGrath—selected by judge Helen Benedict—offers a harrowing account of ameliorating the impact of AIDS on children in Lesotho.
The poetry winner, "Chronic Care: ‘Broken Leg’ by Keith Carter, Photograph" by Laurie Clements Lambeth—selected by judge Tina Chang—is “ekphrastic,” based on an image. The result is a haunting poetic dialogue between girl and fawn.
Our honorable mentions winners are:
Fiction: “Death Defiant Bomba or What to Wear When Your Boo Gets Cancer” by Lilliam Rivera
Nonfiction: “Double Exposure” by Elisha Waldman
Poetry: “The Rules of Surgery” by Kristin Robertson
The issue also contains new work from Rachel Hadas, Steven Cramer, Marty McConnell, Billy O’Callaghan, and many more. Also included is editor-in-chief Danielle Ofri’s book review roundup of recent titles by authors we’ve published, including Eileen Cronin (read her BLR essay “Breaking Point” here) and Elizabeth Scarboro (read her BLR essay “No Man’s Land” here).
