The Barn

Thomas March

Even the strong
body becomes
a rotting barn,
doors blown open
and windows rinsed
in dust. Inside
the mice outrun
the snakes sometimes,
sometimes their luck.
What you still have
of the sweet hay
of the pasture
is all this straw
that keeps you warm
waiting to burn.
