Fall 2018 (Issue 35)

Dis/Placement Theme Issue

BLR's latest theme issue explores the idea of displacement, drawing from stories that range from the personal to the political, and from the familiar to the foreign.

As a journal with a focus on illness, health, and healing, BLR was uniquely positioned to explore displacement from that perspective, and we've got some stunning work in this issue that approaches the theme from that angle. For example: Barron H. Lerner's essay looks at how literal and figurative displacements shape the experience and understanding of mental illness. Gaetan Sgro’s poem, “Reasons for Admission,” maps out the ways that hospitalization is a contradictory and fracturing experience. And Dan Pope’s “Bon Voyage, Charlie” traces the physical and mental consequences of America’s recent foreign wars on the people who have fought them.

But the idea of displacement is far-reaching. This issue also features an essay by Ha Jin, in which he explores how the concepts of exile and immigration have inflected his own identity. Mehdi M. Kashani's "Slight Turbulence Ahead" highlights parallel stories that bring Iran and Vancouver—and future husband and wife—together. And Rachel Dragos' poem, "The Department Store Badger," is a unique delight.

The issue features striking cover art by Jonathan Allen.
