More about our contest-winners:

Selected by Geraldine Brooks for the Goldenberg Prize for Fiction, Lauren Erin O’Brien’s short story, “Atrophy”—O’Brien’s first fiction publication!—traces the temptations of talismans for the mother of a sick child.

In “Cancer, So Far,” selected by Rivka Galchen for the Felice Buckvar Prize for Nonfiction, Elizabeth Crowell writes about the unsettling middle ground of cancer.

Gabriel Spera’s poem, “Throat”—selected by Rachel Hadas for the Marica and Jan Vilcek Prize for Poetry—dissects the assault of cancer in a sequence of twelve Elizabethan sonnets.

This year’s Liebowitz Prize for Student Writing goes to Janna Minehart, a photographer-turned-medical-student who set about documenting cancer survivors. In her winning essay, “Portraits,” the struggle to breach the divide between camera and subject is paralleled by that between white coat and patient.

Our honorable mentions winners are:

Fiction: “Full Buck Moon” by Sheryl Louise Rivett
Fiction: “Bamboo Forest” by Faith Shearin
Nonfiction: “Drawing Blood” by Laura Johnsrude
Nonfiction: “The Reluctant Sexton” by Martha Wolfe
Poetry: “The Game of Catch” by Noah Stetzer
